Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, as well as Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser
from Madrid. When she was a toddler, she was an obsessive performer who would
recreate commercials from the television to entertain of her parents. But, she
decided to devote her energies to dancing. After pursuing classical ballet for
nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her studies under a
group of highly acclaimed dancers. When she was 15, she heeded her true destiny
when she outclassed more than 300 other dancers at an audition by a talent
agency. The contract that resulted in her being signed secured her numerous
roles on Spanish TV shows and music videos. This set the stage for a career on
the big screen. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The
Greek Labyrinth). After that, she briefly made an appearance in Framed (1992)
the Timothy Dalton thriller. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her
third film. In it she played one of four sisters that were competing for the
affection of a handsome deserter from the Army. It also received several Goyas
in Spain, which is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Cruz continued
to add films to her list of credits, growing by three or four per year. Soon
Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh)
offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar
(who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she
was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes
(1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In
1998, her fortunes changed when she won an award for the best Actress Goya for
her role in the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz also made
a few attempts at English-language films, but her first international hit was
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), in which she played an unchaste but
very well-meaning nun. Cruz became in high demand across both sides of the
Atlantic since her film won numerous awards and praises. The American comedy
Woman on Top (2001) was her next major project, is about an American chef with
amazing culinary skills and extremely motion sickness. While she was in the US,
