Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. As a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of an individual juror. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
